Popping

Our friends have this thing we all do, and have done for years. We incorporate random pop cultural references into our conversation in place of sound-alike words. It's one of those things that's not funny at all to explain, but hilarious to experience. For example, if Alexis yawns several times in a few minutes, she'll inform me that she is sorry she is "so Yanni Live at the Acropolis right now."

For a long time we've puzzled over what to call this tendency. Tonight I decided that I am going to call it "popping." I want to put together a list of some of the best "poppers" we've come up with and heard from our friends over the years.

One example to start things off:
  • When making a U-turn, Brianna is fond of saying she is going to "hang a Huey Lewis and the News up there."
And some more:
  • When dealing with someone whose customer service skills are not, shall we say, on point, one could soon afterward remark to one's friend that they were, in fact, being a bit of a "Rudy Huxtable." (from Zach)
  • Too bright outside? Man, it is Sonny & Cher out here! Don't forget to wear your Sonny Bono's (sunglasses--from Ellie).
  • Almost blown over out there? It's Windy Wasserstein out here today.
